Facebook ad tracking software: what Meta's Pixel and Conversions API cover, and when to add a paid tool

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerStart with Meta's Pixel and Conversions API; Meta documents one-click website setup with no setup fees. Add a paid tracker such as ClickMagick ($79 per month, monthly billing) for other channels or affiliate sales.

What Meta's Pixel and Conversions API already track

The first Facebook ad tracking software to set up is Meta's own: the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API. Paid tools such as ClickMagick, AnyTrack and RedTrack send their data to Meta through the same Conversions API.

  • Meta Pixel. Meta describes it as a snippet of JavaScript on your website that tracks visitor actions. Tracked conversions appear in Ads Manager.
  • Conversions API. It sends events from your server, website platform or CRM straight to Meta. Meta says it is less affected than the Pixel by browser loading errors, connectivity issues and ad blockers.
  • Both together. Meta recommends running the two side by side. Its recommended way to remove the duplicate is to send the same event name and event ID both ways.

Meta's developer documentation says website events can be connected to the Conversions API in one click from Events Manager with no code, configuration or setup fees. For its Conversions API Gateway, which runs in your own cloud account, the only cost Meta lists is cloud resource or partner fees.

What Meta's own tracking does not cover

Two jobs fall outside Meta's own tools.

  • Other channels in one report. Seeing Facebook next to Google, TikTok or email takes Google Analytics 4 or a tracker.
  • Sales on a checkout you do not control. The Pixel only runs on pages where you can install it. An affiliate whose sale happens on a network's order page needs a tool that takes the network's postback and forwards it to Meta.

A mistake to avoid when adding a paid tool: sending the same purchase from the Pixel and from the tool without the shared event ID Meta uses for deduplication. ClickMagick's setup guide has you remove conversion events from the Pixel and keep only its PageView base code. That step deletes events from your Pixel setup, so write down what is there first.

Where ClickMagick fits for Facebook ads, and where it does not

ClickMagick fits an advertiser who sends Facebook traffic to their own landing pages and wants two things Meta does not give: Facebook beside other channels in one report, and sales recorded outside their own site passed back to Meta. Its knowledge base describes pasting a tracking template into the URL parameters field in Ads Manager, then sending conversions to a Meta dataset. Affiliate sales that arrive by postback are sent on to Meta too. The ClickMagick for Meta ads guide walks through the plan choice.

Starter allows 1 ad account per platform with 10,000 tracked visitors. Standard, at $199 per month on monthly billing, allows 5 with 100,000.

It does not fit a store that advertises only on Meta and sells on its own checkout, which Meta's one-click setup already covers. Nor is it the lowest-priced way to get server events to Meta: Stape's gateway hosting is $10 per month for each Pixel against $79 per month for ClickMagick Starter on monthly billing, although Stape's product handles the Facebook Conversions API only.

Which Facebook ad tracking setup to choose by advertiser type

  • Meta ads only, selling on your own site: the Meta Pixel plus the Conversions API. No paid tool.
  • Meta's Conversions API Gateway without your own cloud account: Stape at $10 per month for each Pixel.
  • Facebook plus other paid channels: ClickMagick Starter at $79 per month on monthly billing, or AnyTrack Starter at $100 per month billed monthly if you need 100,000 sessions. See the ad tracking software comparison.
  • Affiliate offers promoted with Facebook ads: ClickMagick Starter or RedTrack Builder, both $79 per month on monthly billing. Both process network postbacks and list a Meta Conversions API integration. See the pixels versus postbacks guide.
  • Setup done by the vendor's team: Hyros. Check current price.
