Affiliate link tracker: six tools compared, and when network reports are enough

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerAn affiliate link tracker records each click on your affiliate links and matches it to the sale. Network reports and GA4 are enough for content sites; a paid tracker is for affiliates who buy ads.

What an affiliate link tracker records, click by click

An affiliate link tracker is software that records each click on your affiliate links and, once connected to your affiliate network, matches that click to the sale the network reports. You see which page, ad or email produced each sale, not only how many sales you had.

Tools sold under this name do two different jobs. Some only count clicks on a short link. Others also record the sale, by passing a sub ID through the affiliate link or by receiving a server-to-server postback from the network. If those terms are new, read how affiliate tracking records a sale first.

Affiliate marketing tracker shortlist: six tools and entry plans

An affiliate marketing tracker is the same kind of tool under another name. Where a vendor's page shows more than one billing basis, the basis is named.

Where ClickMagick fits for affiliates, and where it does not

ClickMagick's knowledge base says it works with any affiliate network that supports sub IDs or server-to-server postback URLs. Its Affiliate Link Builder adds a visitor ID to your affiliate link, and its Postback URL Tool gives you the URL to paste into the network account.

It fits an affiliate who buys ads and sends the clicks to their own landing page. ClickMagick tracks ads with UTM parameters, and Starter includes its Conversions API feature for sending sales back to the ad platform. It does not fit sending ad clicks straight to an affiliate link, which ClickMagick's own documentation says is against the rules of most major ad networks. It is also more than you need for counting clicks on short links: ClickMagick says its Smart Links, which are Bitly-style redirect links, cannot be used for conversion tracking.

One point to confirm: the pricing page lists "Unlimited Affiliate Campaigns" as a Standard addition, while a knowledge base article says affiliates can track unlimited campaigns on any plan, so ask support which applies.

When network reports and Google Analytics are enough

If you publish content and do not buy ads, you may not need a paid tracker. Two sources you already have answer the main question.

  • Network reports with a sub ID. Put a different tag in the link on each page or channel. ClickBank, for example, accepts a tracking ID of up to 100 characters and shows it with the sale in its reporting.
  • Google Analytics 4. Google describes Analytics as free of charge. Its enhanced measurement records a click event whenever a visitor follows a link away from your domain, so you can count affiliate clicks per page. It cannot see the sale on the merchant's site, and a standard property keeps event data for 2 or 14 months.

Neither shows which ad or keyword paid for the visitor. That is the gap a paid tracker fills.

Which affiliate link tracker to choose by type of affiliate

  • Content site with no ad spend: network reports plus Google Analytics 4. No paid tool.
  • Branded short links and click counts: Bitly, whose Free plan covers 5 links a month. ClickMagick vs Bitly explains how a shortener differs from a tracker.
  • First paid campaigns on a small budget: BeMob's Free plan (100,000 events a month) or Improvely Freelancer at $29 per month, both below ClickMagick Starter at $79 per month on monthly billing. See ClickMagick vs BeMob.
  • High click volume across many traffic sources: RedTrack Builder (2 million events, $79 per month billed monthly) or Voluum Profit (up to 1,000,000 events, $119 per month billed annually; set that against ClickMagick Starter's $66 per month on yearly billing, not its $79 monthly figure). Events and tracked visitors are different units, so these allowances do not compare one for one with ClickMagick's 10,000 tracked visitors.
  • Meta or Google ads to your own landing page, with sales sent back to the ad platform: ClickMagick Starter at $79 per month on monthly billing. The ClickMagick guide for affiliate marketers shows what it covers.
