Send conversions to Facebook ads: the Pixel, the Conversions API and the tools that send them

Last reviewed October 8, 2026

Quick answerSend conversions to Facebook ads through Meta's Conversions API: set it up in one click in Events Manager if your site already runs the Meta Pixel, or use a gateway or a tracker that sends them for you.

Browser Pixel or server-side Conversions API

To send conversions to Facebook ads, share them from your server through Meta's Conversions API, a direct connection from your server, website platform, app or CRM to Meta's ad systems. Meta says the API processes server events like Pixel events and can capture website events the browser Pixel misses. Meta lists four setups:

  • the Meta-enabled Conversions API, web only, built on your Pixel and one click from Events Manager;
  • a direct integration in code, which needs a developer and, in Meta's table, 2 to 4 weeks;
  • a partner integration, such as Google Tag Manager or Tealium, where the cost varies by partner;
  • Meta's own Conversions API Gateway, codeless, on Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud, with cloud storage fees as its only cost.

A site that already runs the Meta Pixel needs no extra tool for the basic setup. Meta's own route takes three steps:

  1. Check that the Meta Pixel runs on your site: Meta builds the Meta-enabled Conversions API on the Pixel you already have.
  2. In Meta Events Manager, set up the Conversions API for website events in one click. Meta says the events your Pixel shares are then also sent from the server and deduplicated automatically.
  3. Open the Test events tab in Events Manager to check what Meta received.

Stape's Meta Conversions API Gateway is $10 a month for the first Pixel on monthly billing, plus $8 for each added Pixel, as read on October 8, 2026, with a 7-day free trial. A tracker such as ClickMagick sends the events itself.

Send conversions to Facebook Ads Manager without double counting

Without deduplication, Meta says you may see artificially high conversion numbers. Meta's route is the same events through the Pixel and the API, with a matching event name and an identical event ID; Meta says platforms such as Shopify and WooCommerce handle those parameters for you. ClickMagick's route is different: conversions go from ClickMagick alone to a new dataset, and the Pixel sends PageView only. Pick one route and follow it through. ClickMagick's Facebook steps:

  1. Write down what your Pixel sends today, then turn off Auto-Setup Events, Enhanced Events and automatic events such as Purchase in Events Manager, and remove conversion events from your site code. This stops those events reporting.
  2. Create a new dataset in Events Manager; your Pixel stays installed.
  3. Copy the Dataset ID, then generate an access token under Set up manually.
  4. In ClickMagick, pick Audience Optimization from the Tools menu, then Facebook, and set up Actions, Engagements and Sales.
  5. Capture visitor details from your forms so each conversion carries more data.
  6. Check the Audience Optimization log, Meta Pixel Helper and Events Manager; events can take 15 minutes to 6+ hours to appear.

What links a conversion to the ad click

Meta lists email and the click ID as its high-priority matching parameters. ClickMagick needs at least one of fbclid (Facebook's click ID), email, first name, last name or phone, among other values, for a visitor before it sends a Facebook conversion. A conversion from a click over 90 days old cannot go by fbclid, so ClickMagick retries with personal details where it holds them. ClickMagick advises asking for an email address as early in the funnel as possible.

Meta also tells advertisers to obtain lawful permissions and necessary consents before sharing information with third parties.

Give a new dataset a week or two before optimizing on it

ClickMagick advises waiting at least a week or two before optimizing ads on a new pixel or dataset. It also says ads managers almost always show fewer conversions than ClickMagick sends, because they report only events matched to an ad click or view inside the attribution window. On either route, the Test events tab in Events Manager shows what Meta received, and test information stays there for 24 hours.

When a tracker is worth more than a gateway

Stape says its gateway fits those who want the Facebook Conversions API only. A tracker is worth more than a gateway when Meta is one of several ad platforms: ClickMagick's Audience Optimization, on the Starter card at $79 a month on monthly billing, sends conversions to Facebook, Google, Microsoft, TikTok, LinkedIn, X and ChatGPT Ads, and ClickMagick pulls ad costs every hour. Stape lists a 7-day free trial and ClickMagick a 14-day one. The Facebook ad tracking software list compares the trackers, and ClickMagick integrations lists what connects.
